Sinhala is a very different language than the languages used in other parts of the world. Sinhala is the only language in which every spoken word can be written. There are also 4 alphabets in the Sinhala language. The standard alphabet is 64 letters. Sinhala is used as the official language of Sri Lanka and Sinhala is not used as the official language of any other country.
The book that contains all the grammars of the Sinhala language, which is such a special language, is called "Sidath Magazine". In addition to Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit are the main languages used in ancient Sinhala Sri Lanka. English and Tamil are the languages that Sri Lanka received after the invasions of various nations.
There are sayings from ancient times in this wonderful language endemic to Sri Lanka. Here are some of them and what they mean I will give details.
1. "Atuwa kada putuwa heduwa wagei". - "Atuwa" is a construction used for paddy storage in ancient Sri Lanka. It is an essential part of a home in Sri Lanka, an agricultural country. This saying refers to the demolition of the "atuwa" to make a chair in a house without a chair and its use to make a wooden chair. The idea is that destroying something of great value for the sake of something worthless is a foolish act.
2. It's like Andre ate sugar. - Andre is a major figure in Sri Lankan folklore. There are many interesting stories about him. I will not write more about it here as I intend to publish a separate article on Andre's stories. This is the story behind this saying.
Andare is the royal clown. One day when he was going to the palace, he saw that the sugar had been left to dry in the courtyard of the palace. He knew they were sugar, but Andare just asked the king what these were. The king also made fun of him and told him that it was white soil brought from another country. Andare wanted to teach King a lesson, and Andare devised a plan because he wanted to eat sugar. He hurried home, told his son something, and returned to the palace.
After a while Andare's child ran to the palace crying loudly and said to Andare, "Oh Dad, our grand mother is dead." Then Andare cried and took his son and rolled in the sugar and ate the sugar. The son was also fed sugar. As he ate the sugar, Andre shouted, "Now that grand mom is dead, Soil in your mouth, soil in my mouth." When the king heard this commotion, he went there. Then the king realized that he was caught in Andre's knot. This saying is still used by Sinhalese people today when they try to do something fraudulent in this way.
3. Water does not move in a full pot. - This saying goes that stupid people are very impulsive. When the pot is full of water, the water does not move much. But when there is a little water, the water shakes. It makes a noise. The knowledgeable person will look into every issue and find the right solution. But the ignorant fool goes to work without looking further and makes a mistake. That is the meaning here.
